Scripture:  Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;  9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. 11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 1 Peter 3:8-12 (NKJV)

Observation:  The word of God always amazes me. It is so spiritually confirming and is right on time. As I was reading my devotion this morning, it spoke of spiteful attitudes toward someone who has hurt us. Rejoicing in their pain and suffering. Jesus tell us that we show His love in action, when we love our enemies and pray for those that persecute us. By doing so we mimic the perfect love of our Lord. Peter list 5 elements that characterize us as believers: (1) One mind- goals should be in alignment, (2) Sympathetic – responsive to needs of others (3) Love – see each other as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus (4) Tenderness – sense of caring and affection (5) Humility – being willing to encourage and rejoice in the others successes. Peter developed the qualities of humility and tenderness the hard way. In his early days with Christ, these attitudes were not easy for him or come naturally. But the Holy Spirit changed his personality from that strong-willed person to be used by God.

 Application:

  1. In a fallen world, it seems that it is acceptable by some to tear others down with our tongues. Satan wants us to be confused that way.  Align our hearts and tongues with the Lord’s royal command “Love your neighbors as yourself, in the same way I have loved you”.
  2. If we are obedient to Christ, our spirits will not stand for discord. Stay in prayer and in the holy word daily. Praise Him for the love that he showers down on you. We have the power through the Holy Spirit to change hearts and win souls for Christ.
  3. As the world grows darker, our light should shine that much brighter to the world. So let your character, being controlled by the Holy Spirit, reflect tenderness and humility for those around us. Everyone is watching us, so be mindful of what we are reflecting.

Prayer: Gracious and merciful Father, thank you for your unconditional love. Forgive us when we fall short of your glory. Restore us and give us a clean heart and a right spirit. I pray we will live in humility and love to one another, forgiving each other shortcomings. When we stumble or fall, we will help our sisters and brothers back up. Praying with them and for them. May we serve with joy and thanksgiving everyday of our lives. Let not our hearts be blighted by the world view, but enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah, Praise your Holy name, Amen!
