Isaiah 49:15-16 (NLT)

“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!  See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.

The children of Israel is currently in Babylonian captivity due to their continual disobedience to God’s instruction. While they are in captivity, God gives the prophet Isaiah an encouraging message about their restoration that will come after this.  In these couple of verses, God is comparing His love to that of a mother for her nursing child. He reminds them that there is no way that He could ever forget them because they are written in the palm of His hands. Think about that for a minute. How often do you look at your hands? The Israelites were always on God’s mind for they were His chosen people. They didn’t think so because they were suffering but they forgot that it was because of their own actions. It was evident that they were still covered by His love!

Don’t think for one moment that your disobedience has turned God away from you. On the contrary, it has turned you away from God. He will never forget you! God has not forgotten about you! You are always on God’s mind. Despite the trials that you may be currently facing, have already faced or about to face, you have been inscribed in the heart of God.

Think about the intimacy that occurs between a mother and a nursing child. She is the child’s sole source of food and the child knows no other place to go. The mother goes to great lengths to ensure that she produces enough milk for her growing child. She will never forget that her child has to eat in order to live. God does even more for us! He knows that without Him nothing is possible in our lives but He also gives us free will to make that decision for ourselves. God is our sole source for everything we need in life and that is why He will never forget us.

Father, thank you for inscribing me on your heart. I’m so glad that even in my disobedience, it doesn’t cause you to forget who I am. Thank you for being Jehovah-shammah! In Jesus name, amen!
