John 14:27 (NLT)
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure and His return. He gives them the promise of the Holy Spirit and a gift of peace. A peace that they could never get from the world. He already told them ahead of time to not be troubled or afraid. Jesus knew everything that they would encounter and as a great leader, He was preparing them. He didn’t want them depending on temporal things and people to give them the tranquility they could only find in Him.
This same gift of peace is available to us today. When we look to material things, people, positions and even our churches to give us the peace that only God can give, we remain in turmoil. Those things may bring you temporary happiness but they will never bring you peace. It’s only a mirage. They were not designed that way. Nothing or no one can do what only God can do. Where is your peace coming from?
We need ask ourselves that on a regular basis to make sure we have a right understanding. Our family cannot give us peace. We may feel peace when we know that they are okay but they are in God’s hand if they are His. We are setting ourselves up to get disappointed and them to fail. Our peace can only be found in our Father.
Father, thank you for giving me the gift of peace that surpasses all understanding! Please forgive me for thinking and allowing things and people to bring me what I can only get from you. Help me to only look to you for the peace in my life. In Jesus name, amen!
