Ephesians 6:1-4 (New Living Translation & The Message)

Parents & Children

O and A

This short passage of scriptures is one of the most commonly used group of verses as it pertains to parenthood and childhood. When parents like to remind their children what the Bible says, Ephesians 6:1-3 are spewed out of their mouths. The bible tells us as children (and adults) to “obey” and “honor” our parents so that we will have a long and prosperous life. Now, as parents when speaking to our children, we cannot fail for leave out verse 4! Oh yes, verse four specifically tells parents not to stir up anger and negative feelings purposefully in our children. In today’s society with social media on an all time high, we have seen the parental “shaming” videos go from one extreme to the next. Parents have opted to embarrass and expose their children in public as a means of correction. This goes against what the word of God teaches us.

While “foolishness is bound in the heart of a child (Proverbs 22:15)”, it is important for parents to raise their children to make wise choices and should they choose to deviate from the right path, it’s the parents job to bring correction in love. Parents can show love to their children (and vice versa) in three ways:

  • Remember that children and parents both have a responsibility in the Lord. The parents are to give guidance and correction without cultivating negative feelings in their children. The children are to respect the position of their parents no matter what.
  • Remember that children do ninety percent of what they see and ten percent of what they hear. Parents are to set the first examples of right and wrong for their children. As the children grow up they are reflections of what they have seen and heard over the years. What you instill in their spirits is what you will get in return.
  • Remember God’s commandment for us to love each other as God loves us- not as we want others to love us. There is a difference. God’s love is perfect and unfailing. Parents should love and teach their children to love in the manner of God.

Being a parent and being a child is really a partnership. It is our frontline responsibility to cultivate a loving relationship at home first before we spread it abroad. After God, our family is next most important. Start today by giving your child and extra dose of pure love- in a hug, kiss, or by giving them a compliment.

Father God in heaven, thank you for being the perfect example of love in our lives. God you have granted us your love in so many ways it is beyond comprehension. Lord, show us how to love others like you love us. We cannot say we know you if we fail to demonstrate love towards each other. God, bless us so that we can bless each other by showing grace and love each and every day. Turn parent’s hearts back to you and turn our children’s hearts back to their parents. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
