 “A Guilty Love”

Scripture Reference:  Mark 6: 17-28

Observation:  In this passage of scripture, we hear about the beheading of John the Baptist and what led to his execution.  Herod Antipas, divorced his wife to be married to Herodias, which was his brother, Herod Philip’s wife.  John the Baptist had no problem speaking out against this illegitimate pairing, declaring in Mark 6:18 “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife”.   In fact it was prohibited in Jewish law (see Leviticus 20:21).  Though Herod believed John the Baptist to be a just and godly man, Herodias despised him for rebuking their marriage and publicly announcing her shame and guilt.  She needed to get rid of him at all costs, she wanted him dead. Herod’s ill-advised love for Herodias led him to put John in prison. Later, on his birthday, Herod hosted a celebration dinner for “his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee” (Mark 6:21) and Herodias’ daughter performed a dance that impressed him and his guests so much so that he promised her that he would give her anything she wanted.  This was a mistake.  Herodias’ daughter, not knowing exactly what to ask for, sought her mother for advice.  Without pause or apprehension, Herodias asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.  Mark 6:26 says “And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her”.  Although Herod was regretful of the oath he made, he wanted to keep his promise and not appear untrustworthy or foolish in front of his guests.  He immediately commanded his guards to behead John and place his head on a platter for the girl.

  • In determining who we enter into relationship with, God’s commands should be considered most important.
  • Remember that love is about sacrifice not selfishness.
  • A guilty love exists when we choose to disobey God when we “fall” for someone.
  • So to not be consumed with guilt and inclined to commit more sinful acts, we must repent and receive His love and mercy.
  • The one that God has created just for us will never ask us to go against the word of God.

Father, you are awesome and wonderful!  Lord, please help us to remember to consult you in every aspect of our relationships with others. Change our hearts and minds so that we seek a love that is a reflection of who You are. Give us the spirit of obedience.  Thank you for the example of love you gave us in the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ.  Please forgive us for the times we go against Your word and Your will for us.  We trust that you have forgiven us of our sins and guilt.  We love you and we want to love you more.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
